2019 Board Candidates - Amy Torres

Candidate for Women's Division Assistant Commissioner

Back to Nominees Page

1. What is it about the Board position you would like to hold that most interested you in running for office?

Women's Division Assistant Commissioner

2. How will you contribute to the Board as a whole if elected?

Why am I running? That was something I had to really think about over the last few days and honestly it comes down to four things that I think need to change in the Women's Division:

1) Participation/Number of Teams

This Spring season we had five teams, our lowest number since the start of our league. For those that play in city league or tournaments outside of Softball Austin, you are well aware that there are women out there playing softball and interested in...playing more softball. We can't run the division the way it has run and expect to bring in those players and teams. We need to think outside the box about how-to setup seasons to get those teams and players of various skill levels in. As a whole when the Women's Division thrives it also helps feed in new players for the Open Division as my guess are about 10% of the Women's Division players who also do double-duty in the the Open division. A healthy Women's Division helps the league as a whole.

2) Communication

Because of the two national organizations our league belongs to (NAGAAA & ASANA) we need to ensure that our Women's Commissioner is clear, not only in what is happening at a national level but being clear in sharing these details and details of Softball Austin at the local level. At the end of the day we are a recreational sports league. We need to be communicating transparently to our teams and members and ensuring that everyone is understanding of what is going on, where they can find that information or answering their questions.

3) Identity

The Women's Division should come together and determine what are the things that are most important as a division and make sure that they are acting on those items throughout the year. Is more bids a want of the division? If so, then what are the steps the division needs to take to ensure those bids are available? Do we want to bring in more players? What are events the division can host to help recruit? At the end of the day, it's easy to say "I want that" to everything but because this is a volunteer organization we as a division should meet, decide and use that to form an identity and direction for the division for future seasons.

4) Community

I love Softball Austin. I have made numerous friends because of the league. I spent my own time and money starting the Women's Division to continue to grow this community. As the Women's Division shapes its identity, I'd like to ensure that it supports and helps grow the league's community as a whole. I always hear about the differences but at the end of the day we all love this game that we choose to block our Sunday off and that commonality is something we should use to help grow the Softball Austin Community as a whole.

I really don't plan on campaigning or using social media. You all know me or have played against me. I'm here. Available to answer questions and just talk...about softball.
