Playing in the League

How do I play?
If you are currently on a team but not yet registered, please contact your Coach or Team Manager. They will send you an invite where you can login and pay your registration fee. If you are not on a team, please email membership@softballaustin.org.
How are League announcements handled such as rainouts/cancellations/etc.?
We have several means of communication with players and coaches. Our primary means is by email notices. You can follow us on Twitter at the handle @SoftballAustin. We also update regularly on our Facebook Groups page, Softball Austin Facebook Group. The page is private and requires a Facebook account to request membership to the group.
What kind of bat can I use?
The League follows USA Softball rules which means that bat has to be ASA Certified. Please see USA Softball's article on Certified Bats. Also see this for a listing of approved bats. Your Team's Coach can also provide guidance on the type of bat that is approved.
What do I need to play?
Most teams will have uniforms made but at the very minimum, all you need is a shirt with a visible number on the back. A blank shirt with a duct taped number works in a pinch or until a uniform/shirt comes in. Cleats are not required, but if so, they must not be metal. Metals cleats are banned for safety purposes. A bat can usually be provided by your team if you do not have one. You can then decide to purchase one if needed or desired.
Where are the games played?
All Softball Austin games are held at the Monroe "Lefty" Krieg Complex, 515 S. Pleasant Valley Road in Austin (78741). The fields are conveniently located about seven minutes from downtown Austin. Check out our Maps and Directions page for more information.
When are the seasons?
Spring season usually starts around February. Fall season starts around September. Updates can be found on our website. The league currently plays a spring and fall season. The season normally lasts six to eight weeks. Games are played on Sunday and may begin as early as 8am, with the last game begins no later than 2 p.m. Teams usually play two games each Sunday. Schedules are distributed to coaches and posted on the website in advance of the season, once team registration has closed. Additionally, the Spring season offers an end of season tournament.
How long does the season last?
Our seasons usually begin the first week of October (fall) and the last week February (spring). Check the website often to keep informed on league activities.
Are the rules the same as the City of Austin softball rules?
Basically. However, we are part of two national softball organizations and with that we have specific memberhip and rules of play that we must follow. Specific rules can be found in the Governance & Documentation section.

About the League

What is Softball Austin?
Formed in the fall of 2004, Softball Austin's mission is to offer the Central Texas gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered (GLBT) community, along with its straight alliances, the opportunity to experience and enjoy recreational softball in a competitive, inclusive environment. Softball Austin is truly a "League of our own."
Why do we need our own league?
Softball Austin helps build a stronger, more cohesive GLBT community. Players and fans are free to be who they are in a fun, safe environment.
Who runs the league?
An elected board of directors works with coaches and managers of each team to operate the league, plus dozens of volunteers. The current Board membership can be found under Governance & Documentation.
Who's eligible to play in the league?
Anyone who joins the league, signs a waiver form, and pays a player fee is eligible to participate. Player fees help administer the league and pay for field rental, balls, umpires, website management and social events. Because teams will have a closed roster every player must be a member of Softball Austin before they can play in a game. Unlike the city's league, if a team is short players it is not allowed to pick up players from the bleachers or another team. That's why teams are encouraged to carry at least 13 or 14 players on their roster.
Is there a place for me in Softball Austin?
Absolutely. This is an inclusive, affirming "open" league where all are welcome men, women, gay, straight, transgendered. Women make up approximately 50 percent of the league's membership.
How much is team registration?
Team registration is $400. (Fall 2013)
What is NAGAAA (Open Division)?
Softball Austin is a member of the National American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA). Created in 1977, NAGAAA currently has 49 gay and lesbian softball leagues in 35 cities in the United States and Canada. Teams representing these leagues participate in the NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series (GSWS), hosted each year in a different member city.
What is ASANA (Womens Division)?
Softball Austin is a member of the Aaateur Sports Alliance of North America (ASANA). Created in 2007, ASANA currently has 24 womens division softball leagues in 24 cities in the United States and Canada. Teams representing these leagues participate in the ASANA Softball World Series (SWS), hosted each year in a different member city.
